MPB’s Martyn Price MBE discusses the future of construction skills on ‘The Hodcast’

As MPB Structures enters a period of unprecedented growth, our newly appointed Business and People Development Director, Martyn Price MBE, sat down with Sam La Roche on ‘The Hodcast’ to discuss the vital importance of youth engagement, retention, and creating sustainable career pathways in the concrete frame sector.

At MPB Structures, we pride ourselves on being a progressive company with a record-breaking secured order book. With high-profile Build To Rent schemes, major packages on HS2, and large-scale Co-Living projects across London, Birmingham, Manchester, and beyond, our workforce is the heartbeat of our success.

To support these ambitions, we recently welcomed Martyn Price MBE to our leadership team. His appointment signals a major investment in developing a sustainable future talent pipeline and enhancing the competencies of our existing team.

Bridging the Skills Gap

Martyn, who also serves as the Chair of the Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force (CCATF), is a leading voice in UK vocational training. In his recent appearance on The Hodcast, he explored why the industry must move beyond “tick-box” compliance and focus on genuine engagement.

Key talking points from the episode included:

  • The Power of Pre-Employability: How tailored programmes can bridge the gap for job seekers, providing a clear route into trade and technical roles.
  • Retention through Mentorship: Why building trust is essential to keeping young people in the industry long-term.
  • Upskilling the Current Workforce: Ensuring our existing team has the professional development needed to meet the challenges of modern, large-scale infrastructure projects.

MPB Welcomes New Procurement Policy Note Prioritising Skills in Public Contracts
MPB Structures welcomes the recent announcement from the Cabinet Office regarding the new Procurement Policy Note (PPN). Effective from January 2027, the updated framework will double the minimum social value weighting to 20 per cent on government contracts valued at £5 million or more. Most notably, the policy refines social value outcomes to two core criteria: ‘good jobs’ and ‘skills’. This structural change means that apprenticeships, training, and work placements will effectively count for double in the bidding process. As an organisation deeply committed to workforce development, we fully endorse this strategic alignment of public spending with long-term skills generation.
