A533 EXPRESSWAY BRIDGE NEAR RUNCORN

Working with AmeySRM for National Highways, MPB is currently working on the replacement of the A533 Expressway bridge over the M56 near Runcorn with a brand new crossing just a few metres further up the motorway. This is MPB’s second project for AmeySRM following the successful completion of the M6 J19 scheme in 2021.

The existing bridge, between junction 11 and junction 12, was built in 1971 and is being replaced with a new 67m two-span concrete bridge, consisting of a single two-lane carriageway and a combined footpath and cycleway. MPB is carrying out the construction of all insitu concrete including abutments, central pier located within lane closures on the M56 and the in situ bridge deck construction. MPB works will be complete by Feb 23.

MPB Welcomes New Procurement Policy Note Prioritising Skills in Public Contracts
MPB Structures welcomes the recent announcement from the Cabinet Office regarding the new Procurement Policy Note (PPN). Effective from January 2027, the updated framework will double the minimum social value weighting to 20 per cent on government contracts valued at £5 million or more. Most notably, the policy refines social value outcomes to two core criteria: ‘good jobs’ and ‘skills’. This structural change means that apprenticeships, training, and work placements will effectively count for double in the bidding process. As an organisation deeply committed to workforce development, we fully endorse this strategic alignment of public spending with long-term skills generation.
