MPB Structures Celebrates Major HS2 Milestone as TBM Elizabeth Completes Birmingham Tunnel

MPB Structures is celebrating a landmark achievement on the HS2 project today, following the successful breakthrough of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Elizabeth’ in Washwood Heath, Birmingham.

As a key delivery partner to Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and HS2 Ltd, MPB was honoured to have delivered the extensive Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) package for this critical Washwood Heath to Saltley section of the route.

The giant TBM completed its three-and-a-half-mile journey after 19 months of continuous tunnelling. The operation was a significant feat of modern engineering, navigating complex ground conditions and passing safely beneath critical national infrastructure, including the M6 motorway, the River Tame, and major energy networks.

Sean Boyle, Board Director at MPB Structures, commented on the achievement:

“We are incredibly honoured to have played our part in this historic milestone for UK infrastructure. Delivering the massive FRC package for the Washwood Heath to Saltley section was a significant undertaking, and seeing TBM Elizabeth complete its journey is a proud moment for our entire team.

This is a testament to the amazing collaboration between HS2 Ltd, Balfour Beatty VINCI, and all supply chain partners. Massive congratulations are due to everyone involved. Together, we are delivering a world-class railway for the future, and it is simply incredible to be a part of it.”

The completion of this tunnel drive marks a significant step forward for the HS2 project. MPB Structures remains committed to supporting the delivery of transformative infrastructure projects across the UK through its expertise and collaborative approach.

MPB Welcomes New Procurement Policy Note Prioritising Skills in Public Contracts
MPB Structures welcomes the recent announcement from the Cabinet Office regarding the new Procurement Policy Note (PPN). Effective from January 2027, the updated framework will double the minimum social value weighting to 20 per cent on government contracts valued at £5 million or more. Most notably, the policy refines social value outcomes to two core criteria: ‘good jobs’ and ‘skills’. This structural change means that apprenticeships, training, and work placements will effectively count for double in the bidding process. As an organisation deeply committed to workforce development, we fully endorse this strategic alignment of public spending with long-term skills generation.
