MPB Structures is delighted to announce the completion of the final structural phase for the landmark Delta Junction project in Wednesbury, a critical component of the Midland Metro Alliance’s network expansion. This project has already been highly commended by the Institution of Civil Engineers for its Innovation and Technical Excellence.
The impressive structure, standing over six metres tall and stretching 220 metres in length, forms the vital connection between the new Black Country Metro Extension and the existing Line One tram service. Its primary function is to elevate the new extension from the level of a disused railway line to meet the operational Midland Metro track, enabling future tram services to connect both Wolverhampton and Birmingham seamlessly.
A Showcase of Technical Expertise
Working on behalf of our valued client, the Midland Metro Alliance, MPB Structures successfully managed all elements of the £12 million scheme. This involved significant self-delivery and complex supply chain management, including:
- Self-delivery of 1,264 tonnes of reinforcement.
- Pouring 5,200 cubic metres of structural concrete.
- Managing ground stabilisation through the installation of 6,700 cubic metres of deep soil mixing columns.
- Overseeing the installation of 53-metre-deep, one-metre diameter temporary cased piles.
- Completing 850 square metres of sheet piling adjacent to live tram operations, a key logistical challenge.
