MPB Structures is thrilled to announce its recognition at the esteemed CONSTRUCT Awards, where the company secured the ‘Best of the Sector’ award for its significant contribution to the Marston Box project. The CONSTRUCT Awards celebrate excellence, capability, and inventiveness within the concrete construction industry, and this win highlights MPB’s expertise in delivering complex and innovative infrastructure projects.
The award-winning Marston Box project, a critical component of the HS2 railway line development near Fazeley, Tamworth, involved constructing a massive 11,000-tonne (moving weight 12,800-tonne) bridge structure. This 94-metre-long, 20-metre-wide box bridge is designed to carry two high-speed railway lines over the busy M42 motorway.
MPB Structures was entrusted by HS2’s main works contractor for the Midlands, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), to undertake all reinforced concrete works on the project, which commenced in April 2021. This included constructing the guide raft slab upon which the structure was built offline, and the main bridge structure itself. The works culminated in a 1380m3 concrete deck pour.
The project presented significant technical challenges, including highly skewed geometry and the need for meticulous quality control throughout the large concrete pours. MPB’s temporary works and engineering teams developed innovative solutions, including the prefabrication of formwork tables, ensuring efficient and high-quality delivery. The site teams demonstrated remarkable resilience, successfully completing all works, including critical phases during one of the coldest Decembers in recent years.
