A533 Expressway Bridge

The scope included constructing two abutments directly adjacent to the live M56 motorway, a central reserve pier, and the full offline deck works, followed by completion activities once the deck was installed via SPMT. MPB also delivered all 3D rebar detailing for the scheme, taking on the commercial risk and ensuring absolute accuracy across the structure.

Throughout the ECI phase, MPB played a key role in methodology development, working closely with Amey, Sir Robert McAlpine and National Highways to shape safe, efficient, and buildable solutions.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • Minimising disruption to road users through the development of a carefully engineered construction strategy.
  • Using full 3D reinforcement detailing to eliminate clashes and reduce programme risk during detailed design and delivery.
  • Constructing a major central reserve pier, founded on a pile installed within a deep cofferdam, requiring precise sequencing and close interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Delivering abutments within tight spatial and operational constraints, requiring innovative approaches to staging and buildability.

By combining technical rigour with collaborative planning, the team helped ensure safe, efficient construction while managing complex site conditions. Further recognising this excellence, the scheme won the Constructability Award at the ICE North West Civil Engineering awards.
