MPB acted as Principle Contractor on this construct only contract.

The works comprised of:

  • Investigation and grouting of existing mine workings and shaft prior to construction.
  • Demolition of existing structure (s/c Sam Evans and Sons Ltd)
  • Design and installation of temporary works to retain ground 2m below existing running lines with protection to allow working adjacent to live OLE
  • All temporary works designs on site
  • Construction of insitu RC substructures comprising of 700m3 of concrete
  • Installation of pre stressed concrete beams during 8hr ROR possession using a combination of 750t and 1000t crane.
  • Lowering and protection of OLE during demolition. Reduction in height of adjacent OLE structures and modification to OLE components to suit new bridge structure and enable free running though the bridge.

 Key Challenges/Successes:

Limited possessions and a desire to avoid utilising a Christmas OROR possession to deliver best value for the client meant developing bespoke working methods and temporary works. To enable the construction of the reinforced concrete abutments during normal working hours MPB developed a combined earth retention/protection screen design which once erected and bonded enabled the abutments to be fully constructed during normal working hours. The ability to install all PCC beams during 2x8hr possessions with reduced working time due to the presence of OLE using previous experience and detailed planning. The above resulted in the scheme being delivered in a single 30hr OROR possession to enable the demolition and OLE adjustments to be complete and the remaining works being undertaken with standard railway access.
