Broadcasting Place

Broadcasting Place presented a series of technical and logistical challenges typical of complex city centre construction, compounded by its position above active busy highway interfaces.

• Construction took place directly next to the A660 and A58(M) infrastructure, requiring robust temporary works design, continuous monitoring regimes, and close coordination with all local stakeholders to maintain uninterrupted rail operations throughout the works.
• A highly constrained footprint with limited access and no external laydown space demanded disciplined logistics planning, just-in-time deliveries, and carefully sequenced construction activities to maintain programme certainty.
• The reinforced concrete structure incorporated transfer structures, podium slabs, and vertical load paths that required precise setting out and detailed coordination between structural, temporary works, and architectural teams.
• Working adjacent to Leeds Inner Ring Road and busy city thoroughfares necessitated strict safety controls, traffic management, and noise and vibration mitigation to minimise disruption to the public and surrounding stakeholders.
• The project required simultaneous progress across multiple elevations and building zones, with efficient pour cycles, planned crane utilisation, and controlled interfaces between podium and tower construction.

Through early planning, disciplined execution, and strong collaboration with Downing and the wider project team, Broadcasting Place was delivered safely and successfully despite significant technical constraints.
