DELTA JUNCTION

The Midland Metro Alliance engaged MPB under a formal Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract to support the development of the Delta Junction structure on Phase 1 of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension.

Over the six-month ECI period, MPB worked collaboratively with the Alliance’s design and delivery teams to refine the design, optimise construction sequencing, and develop efficient, safe, and buildable methodologies for a highly constrained site located within a redundant railway corridor adjacent to a live tramway and operational depot.

Key contributions included:

• Adopting deep soil mixing as a cost effective and programme efficient alternative to mine working grouting and bored piling.
• Developing a low-cost sheet piling solution, supported by temporary works design, in place of a more expensive Giken installation.
• Optimising construction sequencing to manage access constraints and maintain safe operations alongside live tram movements and depot activities.
• Integrating rolling stock delivery requirements into the construction programme to avoid disruption during critical build stages.
• Supporting stakeholder engagement, including presenting construction proposals to depot operations teams to secure buy in and
  operational alignment.

Through this structured ECI process, MPB were able to validate the feasibility of the scheme, de-risk delivery, and refine the solution to meet the Midland Metro Alliance’s budgetary targets.
