GLASSWATER LOCKS

The project also aimed to have a significant economic and social impact. The MPB Employment and Skills Plan provided training, apprenticeships, and job opportunities for local people, with the city boasting the highest retention rate of graduates in the UK at 49% at that time.

MPB Structures delivered this complex regeneration project within a highly constrained city centre environment, coordinating closely with multiple stakeholders to maintain safety, progress, and high-quality outcomes.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • Managed tight city centre logistics, working beside the Canal & River Trust towpath and tunnel infrastructure while keeping public access open and safe.
  • Delivered complex substructure works, including basement construction tied into sheet pile and contiguous pile retaining systems supported by continuous structural monitoring.
  • Coordinated effectively with multiple stakeholders, Berkeley St Joseph, Birmingham City Council, the Canal & River Trust, and trade contractors, ensuring efficient sequencing across a multi-block development.

This project demonstrates MPB’s capability to safely and collaboratively deliver complex, multi stakeholder city centre developments with strong technical performance and meaningful social value.
