Midland Main Line Electrification

Construction works included the design and installation of temporary works, redundant side span infilling, demolition of existing structures, and the installation of new precast concrete superstructures using a 750t crane. MPB also delivered all associated highways reinstatement, ensuring a coordinated, efficient, and high-quality delivery across this critical electrification enabling programme.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • Finedon Station Road – faced with an extremely tight possession regime, (30 hours on the slow lines and only 8 hours with all lines blocked) MPB developed an efficient construction methodology that enabled full demolition and reconstruction within this limited window. A key innovation was a bespoke climbing handrail system, allowing safe access to the altered piers in minutes rather than hours.
  • Pytchley Road – as a major arterial route through Kettering, road closures required careful negotiation with Network Rail and proactive communication with the local community. To maintain pedestrian access, MPB installed a 35m GE400 combined service and footbridge, which also carried significant diverted utilities including 33 kV HV power, fibre optic cables, and a medium pressure gas main. MPB managed and coordinated all service diversions throughout the works.

These outcomes underline MPB’s strength in managing complex constraints while delivering safe, well coordinated infrastructure that meets the needs of both stakeholders and the wider community.
