Peterborough Energy from Waste

Peterborough Energy from Waste (EfW) is a large-scale infrastructure project delivering a modern energy recovery facility capable of processing residual waste and generating low carbon energy for the regional network. The development forms part of a long term strategy to reduce landfill dependency while providing reliable, sustainable power and heat.

The facility comprised a series of reinforced concrete structures including deep foundations, basements, service trenches, structural slabs, and heavily loaded plant support zones. The industrial nature of the scheme, combined with specialist process equipment and a tightly sequenced programme, required precise engineering, robust temporary works, and close coordination with multiple stakeholders.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

The Peterborough EfW project presented a combination of heavy industrial construction demands, complex interfaces, and strict quality and safety requirements.

  • The reinforced concrete structures were designed to support extreme loadings from process plant, boilers, bunkers, and mechanical equipment, requiring high strength concrete, dense reinforcement, and stringent tolerance control.
  • Deep foundations and substructure works were delivered across large footprints, incorporating pits, ducts, and below ground service corridors that required careful waterproofing, sequencing, and interface management.
  • Construction activities were tightly integrated with specialist EfW technology providers, necessitating early coordination to accommodate embeds, cast-in items, plinths, and access requirements without abortive works.
  • The scale of pours, including thick slabs and heavily reinforced elements, required detailed pour planning, controlled curing regimes, and disciplined quality assurance to meet durability and performance standards.
  • Health, safety, and environmental controls remained paramount on an industrial site with high volumes of materials, large plant movements, and simultaneous operations across multiple work fronts.

Through disciplined planning, strong engineering control, and close collaboration with project partners, Peterborough Energy from Waste was delivered safely and efficiently.
