SAS BRIDGE 13

MPB Structures were appointed by Skanska to deliver the full civils, groundworks, and reinforced concrete scope on this £40m bridge reconstruction package. Our works included the installation of all temporary works required to facilitate the main construction activities, from directional drilling and tie bar installation to heavy duty propping and monitoring systems. MPB also undertook all earthworks, including pile cropping, excavation, and embankment construction, alongside the complete in-situ concrete delivery for the new 100m span bridge deck and all associated civils within the demanding 30 day blockade.

MPB produced all F002/003 temporary works designs for the operational railway, managed all WPPs and TBSs, and provided integrated labour, plant, and materials to deliver this high-risk project with precision.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • Removal of the existing embankment by the installation of sheet-to-sheet ties beneath the railway using directional drilling and staged excavation.
  • Excavation of abutment foundation beneath existing pier and installation of heavy-duty propping.
  • Construction of reinforced concrete abutment beneath the existing masonry arch including the placement of 350m3 concrete and complete rebar stability temporary works.
  • Reinforcement and concrete placement to 92m long bridge deck.
  • 300m3 concrete placed beneath live railway arch.
  • 92m long bridge deck cast in single pour.
  • 23-day railway blockade.

These achievements highlight MPB’s capability to deliver complex, high-risk rail works with precision, control, and total reliability.
