TE18 / VCC1 BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT

MPB were engaged by the MACE/BAL team to deliver the groundworks, drainage, and reinforced concrete works for the Vertical Circulation Core 1 (VCC1) during phase one of the Birmingham Airport terminal extension. The initial airside package involved the removal of PQC and the excavation of 500m3 of fill to enable foundation construction. The team also managed the underpinning of an existing live loading bay, the installation of storm and foul drainage, and the construction of pad foundations, lift pits, and composite floor slabs.

As works progressed, the scope expanded to enable BAL to meet the out of gauge luggage scanning requirements, adding further airside activities including demolition of the existing helical steel luggage chute within the live airport, construction of a southside terminal extension, structural modifications to accommodate new scanning equipment, and all delivered within both day and night shifts to meet the demanding programme requirements.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • All works were delivered within a fully operational air-side environment, with
MPB managing all perimeter controls, security protocols, and compliance requirements seamlessly.
  • Emerging scope and incomplete design details demanded significant technical leadership from MPB, ensuring the programme stayed on track despite
    late-stage changes.
  • Rapid, efficient mobilisation enabled MPB to deliver the OOG works in line with strict regulatory deadlines.

These successes highlight MPB’s ability to respond decisively, add value technically, and deliver critical infrastructure in the most controlled and high-security environments.
