Weldon Road, Corby

MPB Structures was appointed by Tata Steel UK as a key delivery partner for the redevelopment of the new 8” mill within a live factory environment. The team undertook major earthworks involving 10,000m³ of excavation and 6,000m³ of engineered fill, followed by construction of complex substructures including water pits, coolant pits, machine bases, and the installation of 1,100 precision set holding down bolts. Works also included 25 tonnes of embedded steelwork for quick change tooling and 5 tonnes of steel angles for pit and channel protection.

Supporting infrastructure was delivered through 3,000m of drainage and ducting installed with exact pop‑up locations to suit future mill equipment, along with 4,200m² of concrete floor slabs of varying thickness. These slabs incorporated 1,450m of drainage recess channels to manage coolant splash and return flows to preformed recycling tanks, ensuring the facility was fully prepared for installation of the new state of the art mill.

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

Deep excavations and engineered backfilling for water pits and machine bases required dense reinforcement and intricate formwork.
The fitting of 1100 high tolerance holding down bolts carried significant risk as any misalignment would have compromised the installation of the new mill equipment.
Installing over 3000m of drainage and ducting with exact pop-up locations introduced risks of clashes and incorrect levels critical to future commissioning.
Large scale earthworks within a confined internal area required careful planning to protect adjacent structures and avoid settlement.
Programme delivery was closely tied to the arrival of international equipment increasing the importance of dimensional accuracy and timely completion.

Despite these challenges, MPB delivered the works with precision and strong risk management. Close collaboration with Tata’s engineering team, rigorous planning, and high-accuracy execution resulted in a final installation that exceeded expectations of both the client and the Italian mill manufacturer.
