WIGAN SPRINGS BRANCH DEPOT

MPB completed the civil engineering package of works on behalf of Volker Rail at Wigan Springs Branch Depot. The package of works included the construction of 5no 100m long concrete aprons, the construction of a new car park and the installation of deep drainage and attenuation in a railway environment.

The drainage works included all surface water and foul water drainage for the new depot, constructing a new 3m diameter manhole onto a live sewer and the installation of a 5m deep attenuation tank in a sheet piled cofferdam directly adjacent to the up goods line of the West Coast Main Line.

The carpark installation included the installation of kerbs, drainage, surfacing and white lining. A new bell mouth was also installed as part of the works.

This scheme showcased MPB’s strength in delivering complex civil engineering within high‑risk, tightly constrained environments

CHALLENGES / SUCCESSES

  • Operating within a live, fully operational depot, requiring exceptional coordination and uncompromising safety management.
  • Installing deep drainage directly beside the live West Coast Mainline, including a controlled breakthrough into an active sewer.
  • Navigating a compressed programme driven by design delays and extensive interfaces with track and OLE works.
  • Securing S278 approvals to tie new works seamlessly into the existing highway network.
  • Managing a rigorous hand back and entry into service process, successfully completed without issue.
  • Delivering sheet piling and attenuation tank installation in running sand within the track support zone, a technically demanding environment requiring precision and robust temporary works.
